What’s going on:
This type of personalisation is closely linked with catastrophic thinking. However, in this case the negative conclusion is drawn that: “what is happening is not only awful…. but that I am to blame”.
Example:
A manager’s team is under performing so he is 100% to blame.
Replace with:
There is no “I” in team, so let’s look at what we are collectively doing well and what we can still get better at together.
