Whole School Approaches

  • WellCome

Committed to making inspiring, high-quality science education available to all young people. Science should be exciting for young people, giving them skills and opportunities to improve their futures. But not all young people are inspired by science. Some don’t find it relevant to their lives, or know what careers are available. We want to make sure that all young people in the UK have access to a world-class science education.

  • Collaborative Learning Projects

Developing new activities to support exploratory talk around stories in early years between children and parents/teachers. Developing challenging information gap activities for well motivated late arrivals, literate in first language, in secondary schools. Collaborative Learning is practitioner led, has evolved over the last thirty five years and is still evolving. We support a teacher network that shares resources that scaffold talk. Our activities can be used as they are, or tweaked a little to suit different classrooms or they can be an inspiration/a template for you to develop your own resources that we hope you will in turn share with us.

  • Mastery Approach

Inspired by teaching approaches developed in Singapore and Shanghai, mastery is an inclusive way of teaching that is grounded in the belief that all pupils can achieve in maths. A concept is deemed mastered when learners can represent it in multiple ways, can communicate solutions using mathematical language and can independently apply the concept to new problems.

Teaching for mastery supports National Curriculum objectives, but spends more time reinforcing number before progressing to more difficult areas of mathematics.

  • Staff Achievement Recognition

Recognise the achievements of the staff.

  • Reward Systems

Reward systems are one of the most effective ways of establishing a positive classroom environment. They promote good behaviour and incentivise students. You can create a points reward system, give out stickers or create reward jars etc.

  • Precision Teaching

One of the most effective teaching strategies for ensuring high levels of fluency and accuracy is Precision Teaching. Precision Teaching involves short one minute tasks to build skills by practising them regularly. It lets you monitor and track the progress the child makes very carefully and make changes to ensure the child is learning as fast as they can. It is not in fact ‘teaching’ in the full sense but is a tool to help highly effective teaching and support where a child is finding something difficult or where the skill they need to learn needs to be fluent and automatic. Carefully designed tasks allow children to practise key skills until they are fluent. It provides the mechanisms for assessing and monitoring progress.

  • Effort recognition

In the classroom, teachers use reinforcement in a variety of settings. For example, you may want to reinforce positive behaviours and rule-following, so students consistently meet expectations for their behaviour. Additionally, reinforcement can be used to help encourage students to put forth effort in the classroom. This lesson will help you learn how to reinforce and recognize effort so your students will work their hardest, even on activities that challenge them.

  • Self Assessment

Self and peer assessment are important aspects of assessment for learning practice. Assessing their own work or that of others can help pupils develop their understanding of learning objectives and success criteria. Research has shown that pupils make more progress when they are actively involved in their own learning and assessment.

Years of research have shown that mindset is malleable. This means that by helping students to develop a growth mindset, we can help them to learning more effective and efficient.
